As you get older, hearing loss becomes more prevalent, but that doesn't mean you can't reduce the risks or even prevent it. If you are already experiencing ringing, buzzing, or having to turn the volume up on your television more often, your hearing loss may already be starting. Here are some healthy habits that can help you keep the hearing loss from worsening.

Protect Your Ears As Much As Possible

It is far too common for someone to not protect their ears enough when listening to loud noises. It is important that whenever you will be close to loud and harsh noises, you wear ear plugs or other ear protection. This includes when you are mowing the lawn, working with construction equipment, or will be around people working on home renovations, such as using sledgehammers. If you have a lot of different loud noises at work, wear ear protection there as well. When at a concert, wear earplugs, as you can still hear the music, but it isn't quite as hard on your eardrums.

Being healthier overall can also help to protect your hearing. For example, if you have diabetes, you need to be extra careful about what you eat. Make sure you eat healthy and take care of your blood sugar levels to reduce hearing loss. Obesity can increase your risk of hearing loss, so make sure you follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly to avoid obesity. Smoking cigarettes also increases your risk of losing your hearing.

Don't Drown Out Noise With More Noise

This means that if you hear loud noises outside, you should never turn up the sound on your television or your radio in order to hear it better. Instead, put on noise-cancelling headphones, then listen to the music or TV show with those. There are noise-cancelling headphones with loud cords that should reach toy our TV, computer, or other device just fine. These allow you to keep the volume lower since you only hear the music instead of any other outside noises. Just make sure to keep the volume of them as low as you can. These can also be worn simply alone without listening to anything to drown out distracting noises.

Also make sure you visit your doctor regularly for an ear exam. They can look for potential signs of hearing loss and get you treatment before it worsens.
